Ran across a nice buy at the wine store the other day- a light refreshing white that is just perfect for these dog days of summer. Frascati, from Latium, the region where Rome sits, and its called Frascati, from the town abot 20 miles to the south.
This is from Karen MacNeil's The Wine Bible : "Though the ancient Romans were renowned for their discriminating palates and preference for good wines, contemporary Rome seems quite satisfied with wines that are altogether more utilitarian. The best known of these Latium wines is Frascati, a clean, crisp white that is so light in body it broaches air. Made mostly from malvasia and trebbiano grapes grown around the town of Frascati southeast of Rome, the wine is downed by the gallon in Rome's trattorias."
Well put. This is no expensive fancy dancy wine...just a good solid sipping wine for the heat of the day, crisp and thirst quenching, light as can be and that's the hidden secret of it's appeal. It refreshes.
This particular one is a delicious example of what Frascati puts out and at around $10 a bottle a great deal- heck, one pays that much for industrial strength imports at the corner grocery store.
The back label reads: "In the hills near Rome are areas of volcanic soil over 2,000 years old. Here the grapes for Frascati are grown. Frascati has a delicate bouquet of wildflowers and fruit. Its characteristic taste is fresh and distinctive, with just a hint of almond..."
Well I didn't find any almonds, but I sure did find the crispness, the fruit, the wildflowers and a bit of clean citrus on the back end. A great inexpensive wine for enjoying in the shaded outdoors!
