Enjoying an afternoon with my wife and a good supper in the works, we opened a nice bottle of wine from Italy, the North Western part known as the Piedmont. We've always liked it and it seemed a perfect wine to sip as the rain and clouds came and went, periods of pouring showers followed by a few minutes of dazzling sunshine.

Barbera D’Asti, from The Wine Bible by Karen MacNeil-

“The word “barbera” may sound as it could be related to barbaric, but in reality, this is Piedmont’s most juicy, straightforwardly delicious red wine. Scan any Piedmontese restaurant around dinnertime; a bottle of barbera will be on most tables. Barbera is simply a captivating wine with lots of flavour and muscle….a remarkable number of ones being made today with a kind of vibrancy and zip that makes them great counterpoints to food.

The barbera grape is Piedmont’s most widely planted variey. Historically it was grown almost everywhere…although two places that produce most of the outstanding wines are the area around the town of Alba (barbera d’Alba) and near Asti (barbera d’Asti).”

Although it goes very well with bold foods, it is, as Ms MacNeil wrote, vibrant and zippy enough to make a nice sipping wine. Nice balance of acidity and flavor give it a lightness that belies its ability to stand up to spicy, tomatoey and rich sauced meals.

I'll have to keep my eye open for that one....I love a good red with just about anything. Especially a good Chianti with my pasta.
Go ahead...play with your food!
